Is the DTV Transition Bad for the Environment?

With the switch to digital TV upon us, whether in 2 weeks or 4 months, many are opting to purchase a TV with a built-in digital tuner. But what do you do with the older analog one? The set has many components that can be reused but getting at those materials can be hazardous to both workers and the environment. Moreover, it is not uncommon for the disposed electronics to be sent to lesser-developed countries where recycling practices are not regulated. This article in USA Today takes a look at the issue, describing both safe disposal techniques and some methods used that are dangerous to both people and the environment.
