Connect With Your Viewers and Users by Connecting Them

By Cathy Spencer

The economy and lost jobs are daily topics in almost every newscast. And while the news is generally very tough, this is an opportunity to re-enforce the value of local news. The Poynter Institute's Al Tompkins has an interview with a local talk-radio host in Louisville, KY on his blog. The station has a daily segment where employers call-in with openings. The phones have lit up and listener response has been overwhelming. Read the whole post for some more ideas to connect your unemployed viewers and users with employers looking to hire. As Al points out, "I think we need to stop wringing our hands and show the public that media care. If we help a jobless person land a job, I don't think that person will forget us."

Other stations are providing viewers and users with advice on how to reduce monthly bills. WTHR.com has a regular front page segment called "Your Money" providing users advice and resources. Right now they have a link to a site that matches your cell phone and credit card usage patterns with the lowest priced options from service providers.
