How They Spend Their Time

By Tom Dolan

Several stories recently point up the increasing awareness and tactics parents are using to monitor their children's preoccupation with online time. CNN and NBC covered the cruel hoax on MySpace where a young girl hanged herself after a failed "relationship." She had sought out friendship online lacking real friends. The parents tried to make the case that MySpace and police need to take some responsibility for policing the issue better. CBS News has aired stories showing the extremes parents are going to eavesdrop on their children's online activities. One very frank piece, Invasion of Privacy or Smart Parenting?, details what home spying they felt necessary and the new stealth technology and software available for parents.
The CBS NEWS site also cites a new study showing that at least 93 percent of Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 use the Internet regularly. When socializing is largely digital, what's a parent to do? They follow it with a great Tip Sheet of Sites for Parents to stay involved.
