Multitasking: The Latest Trend

By Taylor Strimple

This week's Broadcasting & Cable has an interesting article about DVR users and commercial zapping. DVR users simply want to be in control of their TV watching. In fact, 66 percent of respondents said having the freedom to watch TV on their own schedule is why they purchased the DVR.But an even more interesting fact found by the Deloitte Services' study is that on average, overall respondents participate in 4.4 activities while watching TV. Millennials do the most multitasking with an average of 5.6 activities. For example they can easily talk on the phone, write an email, chat on AIM, listen to music, research online, play an online game and do their homework all while watching TV. With the "constantly busy viewer" in mind, TV News Producers need to factor in the multitaskers when producing their newscasts. They must engage the viewer.
