Making the Case for Seven Day Forecast?

By Tom Dolan

Most news departments agree the 48-hour forecast is the most important one for their viewer. The long range forecast is where most of the debate happens. There is a lot of misconception and hype on the subject. Some Meteorologists position themselves conservatively by saying they can't be accurate seven days out. But they don't have to be. Everyone knows the obvious: weather changes.A great article in Broadcasting & Cable covers most of this in a timely way. Most research shows that the weekend forecast is the second most important thing. Running the 7-Day graphic is the only way to keep the weekend in view. On the accuracy issue--the weather anchor simply needs to hedge his or her forecast, saying, "We will have more accurate forecast as we get closer."
